On Monday, October 13, 43 members of the Timboon Garden Club came together to celebrate four decades of fellowship.

To mark the occasion, president Kerrie Smith read out a letter from past secretary treasurer Elenor Goode, who held the position for 30 years and placed a letter in the Timboon time capsule in the year 2000 for the club to read in 2025.

Now with 60 active members, Mrs Smith said the occasion was one worth celebrating.

“The garden club’s been going for 40 years – it was a place for gardeners to come together and now it’s a place of friendships to come together and visit other people’s gardens,” she said.

“We share plants, we share knowledge and we share friendships, so it’s really valuable to everyone.

“It’s not just Timboon people – we have people from Warrnambool and from all around that can be members and they all come together for their one passion of gardening.

“We’re just having a little plant swapping stall, so you bring what you’ve got and you pop it there then you can pick up and take someone else’s home – you’re just sharing the plants amongst the people.”

Mrs Smith said it was easy to get involved with the club and those who are interested should contact her on 0408 037 355.

“We get together on the second Monday of every month,” she said.

“In daylight savings we do a garden visit and we meet at about 6pm, and in the winter we go at 1pm.

“We might visit someone’s garden then go for lunch or go to the nursery or something garden related.

“We welcome any new members who would like to come – we welcome new people anytime.

“They’re more than welcome to contact me if they want to know what’s on or if they want to offer their garden or anything – we make it an open club that anyone’s welcome to.”

One of the members in attendance, Kath Sumner, has been a member of the club for its entire 40 years.

“When we started off we had a lot of members – I can’t remember how many because it’s a long time ago,” she said.

“We’ve gotten a lot of younger people which is very different to most clubs – they’re very enthusiastic.

“I like the friends you meet and we go to a lot of gardens.

“When it first started and I was on the committee I was really busy and now I’m not, it’s more relaxed and I just have to show up.

“It’s something you can enjoy without raising money for anything or doing that sort of thing. “It’s really good – I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.”
