Celebrating women: Triple Zero (000) responder Martha Prewett spoke at Lismore’s International Women’s Day morning tea earlier this month.

The morning tea, held on Thursday, March 6, saw residents enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and some nibbles while listening to guest speaker Triple Zero (000) responder Martha Prewett.

Lismore Progress Association president Val Lang said attendees were provided with information on her role with the Ballarat-based service, which sees her answer between 55 and 85 calls in an eight-hour shift.

“She kept it real and many helpful questions were asked and answered,” she said.

“This Triple Zero service operating out of Ballarat employs a number of highly trained and skilled local women.

“Martha has been with the service for two years – her roster is usually four days on and four days off, with eight-hour shifts being night time or day time.

“The first priority of a responder is to establish the location of the event, and then the nature of the event to ensure an efficient and safe response – sometimes the caller gives a landmark or cross road reference, and the call-taker will then work to identify the exact location of the event as well as the location of the caller.

“Martha was thanked for presenting her information in such a way that people attending would be more comfortable about using Triple Zero in the future.”

Attendee Bev Steele said it brought together community members from Derrinallum and Lismore and allowed the community to welcome new residents in a supportive environment.
