A day of reflection
RESIDENTS are invited to a special bring-your-own picnic to reflect on the Indigenous history of Australia this Sunday.
The event, run by South West Reconcilliation, will be held at the Woombeech Puyuun Reconcilliation Park on Walker Street in Camperdown from 12noon.
South West Reconcilliation’s Chris Warren said the group was fairly new and wanted to address the misrepresentation presented during the Indigenous Voice referendum of 2023 from the No campaign.
“We just wanted to recognise that there is a lot of unfinished business following the defeat of the Yes 23 campaign,” he said.
“The January 26 event is in response to that - wanting to make use of the Woombeech Puyuun Reconcilliation Park and have an enjoyable bring-your-own picnic with the community in that space.
“People will have a chance to reflect on the Indigenous history of the Djagurd Wurrung Country, reflect on the length of time those people have been here, occupying and being custodians of the land, and as a counterpoint to the very recent Australia Day celebrations in our culture.”
“A number of people in our group want to advocate that Australia Day is not a day to celebrate, and there may be more appropriate dates that we can celebrate our national identity.”
