A new twist on a classic end of year event
TERANG College opened its doors to the community last week, adding a new twist to an old event.
The school hosted a community barbecue and Christmas carols last Friday to celebrate the final day of school for 2023.
The school previously hosted the Terang College Community Christmas Carols at the former P-4 campus, but the event had been in flux over the years due to unpredictable weather and the COVID-19 pandemic.
School principal Kath Tanner said last week’s community barbecue and carols was a way to bring the spirit of the event back and connect with the wider community.
“In the past it used to be a really good community event,” she said.
“We wanted to replicate that on the last day for our students to have an opportunity to invite the community in.
“We worked with Hampden Specialist School and the kinder as well, and asked them to come in and help.
“We enjoyed a barbecue lunch and the students got to sing carols for each other.”
The year marked a major milestone as Terang College P-4 and Hampden Specialist School students relocated to the 5-12 Campus following completion of a multi-million-dollar upgrade to unite the schools on one site.
Mrs Tanner said the schools had an emphasis on connecting students with each other, and with the wider community.
“Any chance we can have to get the community in to the school is important,” she said.
“We want to build those connections.”
Students had the opportunity to spend some time working on their performance, but Mrs Tanner said the aim of the day was only to have fun.
“We’ve done a little singing and practice to tie the event in with education but we’re non-fussed with a perfect performance,” she said.
“We want this time of year to be about having fun and celebrating, with no pressure.”
