Celebrating St Benedict: Camperdown’s Benedictine Abbey was a hive of activity last Saturday for St Benedict’s Day.

The occasion saw Anglican Diocese of Ballarat bishop Gary Weatherall and assistant bishop Scott Lowry lead a special service to commemorate the event, with a number of clergy from across the area joining the celebration.

Superior of the Benedictine Abbey Sister Raphael Stone said she was pleased to see a strong turnout of people wanting to learn more about St Benedict’s Day, which is held annually on July 11.

“St Benedict is the founder of Benedictine life that began in sixth century Italy,” she said.

“His wisdom in setting out a way to truly seek God is distilled in what he calls ‘a little rule for beginners’ of the spiritual life.

“Benedictine monks and nuns, and indeed many Christians, have followed this wisdom throughout the centuries and still do so today.

“The Camperdown Benedictine Abbey celebrated with a sung Eucharist in the Abbey church, followed by a finger lunch.

“Attendees came from all parts of the Anglican Diocese of Ballarat and beyond.”

Sr Stone said the celebration proved to be a joyous occasion, extending her gratitude to Camperdown and Holy Apostles priest Reverend Matthew Jones for assisting over the course of the day.
