In loving memory: Cobden Technical School students Alyvia Mclean and Hayden Chamberlain raised $400 for gastrointestinal cancer in memory of Alyvia’s father.

Year 11 VCE VM student Alyvia Mclean led an initiative to raise awareness and funds for gastrointestinal (GI) cancer.

The cause is deeply personal to her after losing her father earlier this year to the disease following a sudden diagnosis.

With the support of her friend Hayden Chamberlain, Alyvia planned and organised a school event selling milkshakes and jelly cups and staff and students were encouraged to wear green on Tuesday, October 21 – which ultimately went on to raise $400.

The duo’s dedication not only honoured her father’s memory but also helped shine a light on the importance of cancer awareness and community support.

The event also contributed to the students successfully meeting the outcomes as part of the Vocational Major Studies.

“We really enjoyed organising this event and we learnt some valuable skills including teamwork and organisation,” Alyvia and Hayden said.

“We are really glad we got to spread awareness and let others know about this organisation.”

Gastrointestinal cancer is a group of cancers affecting the digestive system, these include cancers of the oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, small intestine, colon and rectum.

The students also thanked Fonterra, Triple F Foods and Cobden Ritchies IGA for supporting the event.
