Another feather in cap for Healthsave
CAMPERDOWN’S Healthsave Pharmacy will now offer medicine compounding services to the community and will be one of four pharmacies providing the service in the south west.
Medicine compounding refers to customising prescription medications to a patient’s needs and is usually done to overcome individual differences that can present.
Examples of this include creating a dosage that is not produced by medicine manufacturers, adjusting the form medications take to make them easier to take, and removing non-essential allergens to overcome intolerances and allergies.
Pharmacist Sarah Venn said the Camperdown pharmacy could also provide an alternative for medications that are out of stock.
“This also means that we can specially individualise medicines for people,” she said.
“If you have problems swallowing a tablet, we may be able to make it into a liquid. We can make some capsules and creams.
“The best advice is to talk with one of the pharmacists, and we can see what we can make for the person.”
Ms Venn said some pharmacists at the pharmacy have done extra training to be able to perform the compounding.
“We know that there are not many compounding pharmacies in the district, and that was a little thing we could take on and do for the community,” she said.
“They might not have to travel as far, to Geelong or Ballarat, or a little bit in Warrnambool. They can get that service here in Camperdown.”
