Speaking with Western District Newspapers last Thursday after find out he had achieved an impressive ATAR score of 88.90, Ashton said the result had come as a shock.

“When I first heard, I was very surprised,” he said.

“I was actually at work.

“I think for half the day my head was in the clouds, I was almost overwhelmed by it.

“I was very happy.”

Ashton said he had pushed himself throughout his studies in hopes of achieving a good score, but had tempered his expectation of getting the school’s top score.

“I was challenging myself to push for Dux, and I was hoping for it, but I wasn’t really expecting it,” he said.

“My parents were pretty happy when I told them.

“I’m really happy to have spent my time at Mortlake College because I think being in a small school environment really helped.

“We’re very personable with our teachers, and I’m glad to have had their support.

“I think I wouldn’t have achieved what I have without their support.”

Ashton is planning to begin his university studies in Melbourne next year, and is currently spending some time weighting his options as to what path he’ll take.

“I’m planning to study a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne,” he said.

“I’m not sure what my major will be yet – I’m thinking something in the realm of politics, law or economics.

“Eventually I would like to complete my Juris Doctor after my Bachelor Degree.”

Ashton encouraged the next generation of Mortlake College students to aim high, remain focused and believe in what they are capable of achieving.

“Try to make sure you have a good mindset when you’re studying,” he said.

“If you’re going in to SACs with a bad mindset, it’s much more difficult to do well.”
