At the going down of the sun... We will remember them

RESIDENTS across the districted braved less than ideal weather on Tuesday to remember those who served Australia at Remembrance Day services in Camperdown and Lismore.

Camperdown’s service at the Soldiers Memorial in Manifold Street saw many turn out with umbrellas to honour those who served.

Camperdown Returned and Services League (RSL) sub-branch acting president Chris Fairbank said he was pleased with the turnout despite factors outside of the sub-branch’s control.

“I don’t think there was much we could have done since it was a weekday and school day, as well as the weather,” he said.

“I’m actually glad people came out and withstood the weather.

“That’s showing the true spirit.

“I think back to the soldiers and what they went through in the First World War, and I think this was a small price to pay for the greater sacrifice they gave for us.”

The service in Camperdown included Camperdown College junior campus school captains Bentley Currell and Zoe Unwin reading the poem ‘Young sons’ and Mercy Regional College’s Matilda Curran reading ‘The poppy’.

Camperdown College principal Vicki Angus said Bentley and Zoe delivered the reading with confidence and respect.

“This was a proud moment for both students and the college, as their maturity and leadership were clearly demonstrated through their thoughtful participation in the ceremony,” she said.

“Meanwhile at the senior campus, Year 7-12 students took part in a thought-provoking service that, due to inclement weather, was held inside.

“Students respectfully listened to the stories shared and participated in a minute’s silence at 11am.”

In Lismore, a crowd of 20 joined with primary students from Lismore and Derrinallum.

Derrinallum RSL president Charlene Knight said the service went well this year.

“The rain held off long enough for the service to be held next to the cenotaph,” she said.

“The main theme this year was remembering and honouring the sacrifice of those who served and are still serving, and for people to sacrifice not only in words but how we live with kindness and respect for each other.”

Lismore Primary School captain Angus Moyle and Derrinallum P-12 College captains Lexie and Lorelai Henderson spoke to attendees during the service.

Mr Fairbank said the community supporting the services in the region was important to honouring those who gave their lives for Australia.

“I want to emphasise we are one country – one people under one flag,” he said.

“God save Australia.”
