CAMPERDOWN hobby harness trainer Steve Lambert was back in the winners stall earlier this week.

Lambert’s four year-old gelding Bakers Bandit took out the South West Horse Transport maiden pace over 1680 metres at Terang on Monday night.

It was the horse’s second career race, with the victory doubling as Lambert’s first since July last year.

“We’ve waited a while with this bloke so it was good to see him get a win,” Lambert said.

“He had a run in January but he was a bit crook so we sent him for a spell for a couple of months.

“He’s been working a bit better since he came back in. He had two trials and then he went to the races.”

Driven by Jason Lee, Bakers Bandit was too strong for Matthew Craven’s Gilded in the final stages.

The pair battled each other in the home straight, finishing nine metres clear of third place getter Demonstrator.

“It was the perfect drive to be honest, but my guy was just a bit too strong in the sprint lane,” Lambert said.

“It doesn’t matter what the margin is those, they all still pay the same.

“It was a maiden too, all the horses in there were still maidens but someone had to break it put it that way.

“He’s only a run of the mill horse – he’s only had two starts and will probably race around Terang and those sorts of places but it will be harder next time no doubt.”

Lambert paid tribute to his team of helpers, thanking them for their support.

He said the win was a good reward for his stable, which last tasted success with Leica Gem at Terang.

“I’ve got a good team of helpers which is good because I’m working full time as well so I couldn’t do it otherwise,” Lambert said.

My partner Carolyn helps on the weekends and Laura Bell helps during the week and the likes of Rob Arundell help out a bit too.

“I’m damn lucky to have them; I couldn’t do it without them.”
