Big day out for Golf Magpies

CAMPERDOWN Golf Magpies Bowling Club had their best weekend for the season last Saturday with all division pennant teams securing wins.

Division one travelled across town to defeat Camperdown, division two played host to Cressy and kept their finals hopes alive with a fighting win and division three travelled to Colac City and came home with their second win for the season.

Division one had a two rinks all win over Camperdown 92-79 and possibly ended any chance of them being relegated next season.

The win also possibly stopped any chance of Camperdown playing finals.

Kev Conheady’s team of Graeme Fitzgerald, Greg Molan and Greg Edwards had a great win over Ron Cameron’s rink 22-16.

Craig Skene’s rink of Gary Body, Peter Reilly and Greg Teal went down to Luke Wright’s by the narrowest of margins 26 to 27.

Glenn Winsall’s rink of David Bateman, Taj Merrett and Jack Paasse played well all day and just went down to Darren Coverdale’s rink 20-23.

Paul Richard’s rink of John Molan, Mark Winsall and James Henry continued their great season with an11 shot win over Mathew Brewer’s rink 22-11.

Tomorrow Golf is home to Simpson, and another win would not surprise.

Seconds: Peter Reilly, Mark Winsall, Greg Molan and Taj Merrett.

Thirds: Gary Body, John Molan, Graeme Fitzgerald and Billy Conheady.

Skips: Craig Skene, David Bateman (M), Kev Conheady and Glenn Winsall.

Division two last Saturday were at home to Cressy and, despite only winning one rink, they came out on top by three shots 90 to 87.

Leanne Fitzgerald’s rink of the Brebner brothers Michael and Noel and the club’s games record holder Ray Bateman were the stars of the day winning by 23 shots 32 to 9.

Chris McLeod’s rink of Terry Place, Kevin Russell and George Bateman lost to Ann Keating’s rink 18 to 26.

John O’Donohue’s rink of Daryl O’Donohue, Isaac Winsall and Noelene Tolland had an eight shot loss to John Nelson’s rink 16 to 24.

Dan Stewart’s rink of Ro Dunstan, Keira Johnson and Elaine Waterfall went down to John Carew’s rink 24 to 28.

Tomorrow Golf are away to Colac 2 and a win would keep their slim chances of playing finals alive.

Division three caused the biggest upset of the day went they defeated City 3 by 2 shots 78 to 76 at Colac which saw them claim their second win of the season.

John Salau’s rink of Janet Molan, Xavier Crabbe and Kathy Banks fought hard all day to go down to Bruce Whittaker’s rink 20 to 22.

Rene Wyles rink of Liz Riches, Ruth Skene and Pat Scott went down to Darren Cowan’s rink 18 to 21.

Peter James rink of Trey Darcy, Andrew Whiteside and Zach Regan went down to John Mills rink 15 to 21.

Club president Stephen Lucas and his rink of Wayne Henry, Kona Kerr and 150 game player Val Coverdale were the heroes of the day with a 13 shot win over David Biddle’s rink 25 to 12.

Tomorrow division three are at home to league leaders Simpson and with nothing to lose a win would not surprise.

Emergency for tomorrow: Val Coverdale and Carol Wilson.

In mid-week pennant last Tuesday division one was at home to fifth placed Cobden and after an enthralling game all day Golf finished up with a one rink to two rinks 6 shot win 70 shots to 64.

Leanne Fitzgerald’s rink of John Molan, Janet Molan and Greg Teal had a one shot loss to Peter Richardson’s rink 22 to 23.

Gary Body’s rink of Rene Wyles, John O’Donohue and Elaine Waterfall had the win of the day by nine shots over Margaret Hester’s rink 29 shots to 19.

Peter Reilly’s rink of Daryl O’Donohue, Kell Edwards and Noelene Tolland went down by two shots to Ann Scott’s rink 20 to 22.

Golf travel to Cressy next Tuesday for the last game of the season and with neither team able to make the four a close game is expected.

In division three last Tuesday Golf hosted Winchelsea and after a hard fought match Winchelsea came out on top by four shots 53 to 57.

The rink of Peter James, Garry Brian, Pat Scott and Val Coverdale lost to Elizabeth O’Brien’s rink 13 to 18.

Ro Dunstan’s rink of Liz Riches, Steph Whiteside and Carol Wilson had the big win of the day over Pat Lowrey’s rink 28 to 14.

Dan Stewart’s rink of Noel Brebner, Ruth Skene and Terri Sinnott went down Angela Littler’s rink 12 to 25.

Golf travel to Colac City next Tuesday and if they win all rinks and other games go their way they could still sneak into fourth spot on the ladder.

The club congratulates David Bateman after his loss by one shot last Sunday in the Champions of Champions at Colac. David played Ian Varcoe from Apollo Bay in the semifinal and was beaten by one bowl on the day 24 to 25.

Ian went on to lose to John Nelson from Cressy in the final.
