Big win for the Caramut Swans
CARAMUT’S senior footballers defeated Penshurst for the first time in 12 years on Saturday in the round three Mininera League clash at Caramut.
The thumping 20.17.137 to 6.17.53 win sees the Muston Shield return to Caramut for the first time since 2014.
“We’ve got the shield back to Caramut, which is quite nice,” Caramut coach Scott Judd said.
“Although it doesn’t mean too much in terms of finals, but for the club and the committee and effort that gets put in behind the scenes, to get that silverware is a very good reward.
“When I came to the club, they beat us by 200 plus points, so to get that sort of turn around in a couple of years is quite rewarding for the players and the club to see all the hard work pay off.”
The games of midfielders Phillip Chatfield and Joel Harriss particularly impressed Judd.
“Phil and Joel are our two big body midfielders, they both set the scene early on Saturday, they did a lot of the grunt work and played very well.
“They gave us the ascendancy by getting the ball forward and into other guys hands that are very good users of the footy, which paid off, with Charlie Farrer kicking five on top of that work and Sebastian Alvarez de Toledo kicking three and they’re both in the midfield as well.”
Forwards Ben Makepeace and Judd also benefited from the midfield supply, kicking four and three goals respectively.
Co-captain Farrer was also named in the Swans best for his five goal effort.
“Charlie’s had a really good start in the midfield and is getting rewarded for effort by getting a couple of goals on the board as well.
“His pace around the ball has been very good and he’s getting better each week.”
Caramut welcomed a debutant in former Carlton and Melbourne AFL star Jeff Garlett.
“It’s a pretty good thing for the club, but also for the boys in the team, it’s nice to have him running around.
“He did a little bit, I wouldn’t say he set the world on fire, I can’t wait for the day that he does set the world on fire because the opposition will have a bit to work on.”
A huge clash awaits this week as the fourth-placed Swans take on the undefeated second-placed Woorndoo at the Woorndoo Recreation Reserve.
“They’ve obviously got themselves in a really good position, have been in a good position for a number of years now, and have got a few handy recruits on board.
“It’s going to be a big game in terms of context to the season and seeing where we’re at as well; we’ll see how far we’ve come.”
