Biggest Morning Tea success
TEA-LOVERS gathered from across the district last week at Thommo’s Hotel in Cobden to host a Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser for the Cancer Council, which is a nationwide community event fundraiser run every year in May.

On Tuesday, May 6, there were more people than chairs available in the dining room of Thommo’s Hotel as the popular fundraiser went ahead for its 24th year running.
Event coordinator Jenny Bongers said she has been part of organising the Biggest Morning Tea in Cobden since it was run by the National Bank starting in 2002.
“When the bank closed, Thommo’s pub offered to have it, and even after the publicans changed they’ve still offered to have it for the past four years,” she said.
“It’s been a collaboration – the Cobden Visitor Information Centre got involved and did advertising and Wendy Matheson from there coordinated a lot of things so this truly is a Cobden event.
“I can’t honestly tell you how much money we’ve raised, it would be over $1000, but it could be more than that – a lot more than that.
“We’ve had raffle tickets, the Cobden Bakery made scones which everyone’s commented on, we’ve had $5 bags of yoyos and $5 lots of food, and Fonterra donated the butter for the yoyos.
“Cancer has effected everybody – everyone’s been very gracious with their time and money and it’s been wonderful.”
Many cakes, biscuits and cups of tea were enjoyed over the two hours the event ran throughout the morning.
Multiple prizes were handed out to raffle winners and leftover treats were happily bought to contribute more to the fundraiser then taken home to be shared with those who could not attend.
