HALF way through the 2023 season, Terang Mortlake is holding on to second spot on the Hampden League ladder.

Regarded one of the season’s big improvers after finishing season 2022 in eighth, the Bloods currently sit just a game behind the South Warrnambool Roosters, with seven wins on the board.

Round nine proved a tough one for the Bloods, who went down by just two points to last year’s premiers Koroit.

The Saints, who currently sit in fifth, just percentage behind fourth-placed Camperdown, are continuing to climb with their eyes no doubt firmly set on taking yet another Hampden flag.

Last weekend’s match-up saw the Bloods get off to a quick start, piling 4.9 on the scoreboard in the first quarter while restricting the visitors to just one goal.

The second term saw the visitors get back in the game, to be within two points at the main break.

The third quarter was a relatively even affair, with the Bloods making good use of the ball and moving quickly into the forward line.

Going into the final term with a five- point lead, the home side worked hard to apply pressure all over the ground but the Saints held on to win by just two points on the final siren.

Final scores were Koroit 14.12.96 to Terang Mortlake 13.16.94.

Lewis Taylor, Rhys Buck, Kane Jonstone, Lachlan Wareham, Ryley Hutchins and Gus Bourke were named in the best for the Bloods.

Will Kain continued his good form in front of goals, adding three for the day, while Rhys Buck, Luke McConnell and Alexander Moloney each kicked two.

Other goal contributors were Ryley Hutchins, Daniel Kenna, Hugh Porter and Lewis Taylor with one apiece.

Terang Mortlake’s reserves now sit in fifth place, a game clear of Hamilton, despite a 22-point loss to the Saints last weekend.

For the Bloods, Thomas Justin, Josef O’Sullivan, Will Berryman, Ryan Tanner, Jack Aitken and Bailey Kavenagh were best.

Berryman, Jack Kenna, Andrew Marks and Juana Pablo kicked a goal each.

Earlier in the day, the under 18.5s celebrated a hard-earned 14-point win over the Saints, 7.6.48 to 4.10.34.

Tyler Vickers, Andrew Wills, Jock McGavin, Tyson Royal, Will Layley and Mitchell Hughes were named in the best for the Bloods.

Wills kicked three for the game and was well supported by Layley with two and Darcy Abbott and Tyson Royal with one goal each.

It was a mixed bag of results for the Bloods on the netball courts.
