The low scoring match saw the Bloods win 6.12.48 to 4.11.35.

“Both teams struggled to score early,” Terang Mortlake coach Lewy Taylor said.

“The conditions were a bit muddy after some earlier rain, Port Fairy certainly came out to give us a contest.”

The Bloods kicked the only two goals of the first half, and extended the lead to 17 points by the last change.

The Seagulls kicked the first three goals of the last quarter to get within a point before the Bloods kicked away again.

“We let them back in for a bit, it was then pleasing to be able to finish strongly by kicking a couple of goals at the end,” Taylor said.

Recruit Colin O’Riordan was best on ground, gathering 35 possessions including 27 kicks.

“That was definitely Colin’s best game for the club,” Taylor said.

“He’s been a great pick up, the boys love playing with him.”

Xavier Vickers and Josh Slater were also praised by their coach.

“Xavier had 20 tackles in his first game back after being injured for a couple of weeks, he always gives everything.

“Josh is having a great year, he works incredibly hard for a player so young.”

In addition to his 20 tackles, Vickers also managed 30 possessions.

Taylor had 29 touches with captain Joe Arundell having 26.

Will Kain was a welcome addition to the team, making his first appearance in Bloods colours for the season.

“The Kain train is back, he had a few shots at goal and offered a real point of difference up forward for the opposition to match up on.”

The Bloods sit in fifth place, four points clear of Portland in sixth after 16 rounds.

This week Terang Mortlake is away to top of the ladder North Warrnambool.

“It’s always tough going to Bushfield, they’ve been the benchmark this year but we’re really looking forward to it.”
