Bloods toppled by Kangaroos
A SECOND half fade-out compounded Terang Mortlake’s woes in its loss to Hamilton Kangaroos last Saturday.
A SECOND half fade-out compounded Terang Mortlake’s woes in its loss to Hamilton Kangaroos last Saturday.
The Bloods fell away after half-time following a competitive opening two quarters, allowing the Kangaroos to cruise to a 17.17 (119) to 6.8 (44) victory.
It was a fifth successive loss for the side.
The Bloods trailed by 10 points after the first break, being outscored three goals to two.
They were able to remain in touch with the home side despite the margin being extended to 16 points at half-time.
However that would be the closest the Bloods could get, with the Kangaroos breaking the game open with a dominant third quarter.
They kicked eight goals to one to move 59 points clear at three quarter time before they kicked away further in the final term.
They added four goals to the Bloods one, with the margin 75 points at the final siren.
Joe Arundell continued his recent run of good form and was named best on ground, while Harry Hobbs, Daniel Kenna, Nick Couch, Matthew Arundell and Isaac Kenna were also among Bloods best players.
In the other grades, the reserves were handed an 18.10 (118) to 8.6 (54) defeat, with the Kangaroos proving to be much stronger in the second half.
Nathan Jones, Lochie Cook, Jake Lee, Ben Kenna, Michael Sargeant and Luke Kenna were named the best players.
And the under 18.5s also suffered a loss, with the Kangaroos outclassing them across all quarters in a 20.9 (129) to 2.2 (14) result.
Henry Kain, Jack Lehmann, Darcy Hobbs, Oscar Baxter, Zac Whiting and Dale McDowell were the best players.
The Bloods will now have a week’s break before returning against South Warrnambool on May 25.
A team performance cemented Terang Mortlake’s open netball side’s position in the top five last Saturday.
The Bloods produced a strong opening term against the Hamilton Kangaroos, with the six goal margin gradually pushed into double figures as they strolled to a 54-35 win.
The result pushed the Bloods four points clear of South Warrnambool in fourth spot, with the two sides to now battle for that placing when the competition returns for round six.
Terang Mortlake coach Lisa Arundell was thrilled with the triumph and said contributions from her entire squad lifted the side to its third victory.
“I was happy with a great team performance on the weekend,” she said.
“It was probably the first game where everyone played well which was really good.”
Arundell said there were several reasons as to why they produced such a strong team performance.
She said having a full side available allowed them to build on the work they had put in over their previous four games, which in turn allowed them to record a second successive victory.
“It was the first week we had our full team so it was good to try out our combinations,” she said.
“And I think we’ve just been building (from the start of the season), we had a solid game the week before and this week it was good to get everyone on court and to try some different options.
“Having said that we did have a good first quarter and then had a lull in the second and third quarters before finishing off strongly in the last so we’re still working on getting four solid quarters in.
“But apart from that, I was happy with our performance.”
The lull in the middle quarters was only a minor concern according to Arundell, who said it would hopefully be eradicated as the group continues to build both their match and mental fitness.
She said given the time of year it was understandable that it was occurring, but she added it was something they would look to improve during the interleague break.
“At the start of the season it can tend to happen a bit, but it’s not a great concern,” she said.
Mid courter Aimee Moloney earned best on court honours in the Bloods’ win, while defender Brooke Hoare and shooter Melissa Burt also played well.
“Aimee Moloney was fantastic, she started in centre and then went to wing attack and her passing, especially into the ring, was fantastic,” Arundell said.
“Brooke Hoare had a sensational game and Melissa Burt had her best game yet so that was fantastic too.”
In the other games, division one was outclassed 39-25, division two lost 44-30, division three was beaten 40-30, the 17 and under side was defeated 39-19 and the 15 and under team went down 31-26.
The 13 and under outfit was the only other side to win its contest after it prevailed 26-22.
