Bomber netballers edge out Bloods

The Bombers were jumped by the competition’s most improved side in the first term but fought back to record a gritty 46-38 victory.
Cobden’s triumph maintained its eight point lead on top of the ladder, with the Bombers to play arch rival Camperdown this Saturday to round out the first half of the season.
The Bombers were forced to play catch up early in the contest after the Bloods capitalised on the scoreboard to open up a 13-6 quarter time lead.
However Terang Mortlake’s control of match soon diminished as the Bombers lifted across the court, with scores tied at 21 apiece heading into half-time.
They were able to push ahead, with 12 goals to nine in the third quarter putting Cobden up by three entering the final term, before a 13-8 last quarter saw them eventually prevail by eight goals.
Jaymie Finch was named best on court alongside sister Emily in the win, with the pair shooting 15 and 27 goals respectively, while Nadine McNamara was solid in defence.
In division one, Cobden overcame a five goal three quarter time deficit to record a 33-29 victory.
Sophie Blain was named the side’s best alongside Kayla Pouw and Helene Foster.
Division two prevailed by the narrowest of margins in a thrilling contest, downing the Bloods 36-35 and now sits four points clear on top of the ladder.
Division three entrenched itself in the top five after recording a 35-17 victory.
Haylee Davis, Alice Dawson and Matilda Mason were the side’s standouts.
A strong final term lifted the Bombers 17 and under side to its first win of the season, downing the Bloods 35-22.
The 15 and under side succumbed to a second successive defeat, going down narrowly 23-22.
The side trailed by five goals heading into the last quarter but could not get itself ahead, with Ruby Cain, Emily Darcy and Lara Taylor the side’s best.
And the 13 and under side went down 24-20 in its clash against the undefeated Bloods.
Cobden suffered its seventh loss of the Hampden league senior football season after falling to the previously winless Terang Mortlake.
The Bombers went down 11.10 (76) to 9.12 (66) at Terang Recreation Reserve after the Bloods edged ahead in the final two quarters after an even first half.
The loss saw the Bombers drop to the bottom of the table, with the side to complete the first half of the year with a home clash against Camperdown this Saturday.
The first term was an even affair on the scoreboard with both sides kicking four goals apiece as the Bombers took a two point lead into quarter time.
The Bloods then fought back in the second quarter and kicked 2.6 to the Bombers 1.2 to hold its own six point lead at the main break.
Terang Mortlake started to take control of the contest in the third quarter and was able to capitalise on the scoreboard, with three goals to one for the term pushing them out to a 15 point advantage.
The Bombers rallied in the last quarter but could not overcome the Bloods defence, with Terang Mortlake holding on to record a 10 point win.
Charlie Darcy was named best on ground for the Bombers, with Damon Symes, Grady Rooke, Louis Cahill, Ryleigh McVilly and the returning Patrick Smith also in the side’s top six players.
Meanwhile, the Bombers reserves are still searching for their first win of the year after going down by 31 points to the Bloods.
The side was eight points down at three quarter time but failed to kick a goal in the final term as Terang Mortlake recorded an 8.8 (56) to 3.7 (25) victory.
Brady Green, Simon Morris, Nick Kemp, Jacob Pekin, Jake Evans and James McLeod were the best players.
And the under 18.5s defeated the Bloods by 47 points to record its fourth win of the year.
Seven goals to one in the second half saw the Bombers prevail 9.10 (64) to 2.5 (17), with Joe Hutt, Brad Gillingham, Lachlan Gass, Rhys Ziegelaar, Jesse Poustie and Oliver Darcy the best players.
