Bombers hit by Magpies
THE Cobden Bombers suffered their second loss of the 2024 season last weekend - going down to the previously winless Camperdown Magpies.
Heading to the Leura Oval on the heels of a round four, 22-point loss to Port Fairy, the Bombers were overcome by the home side from the first bounce on Saturday.
By the main break, the home side had gotten away to a 29-point lead before piling on five goals in the third term to extend that to 56-points going into the final quarter.
Final scores were Camperdown 16.12.108 to Cobden 7.10.52.
Best for the Bombers were Arthur Armstrong, Lachlan Herschell, Daniel Watson, Tim Auckland and Jack Hutt.
Armstrong kicked three goals for the Bombers while team-mates Ben Berry, Jack Hammond, Matthew Kempt and Grady Rooke kicked one each.
The reserves continued their undefeated season, sitting top of the league ladder, after defeating the seventh-placed Magpies by 56-points, 10.15.75 to 2.7.19.
Lachie Davis, Louis Robertson, Brady Green, Matt Clarke and Angus Molan were named among the best.
Oliver Darcy and Brady Green kicked two goals each while Tully Darcy, Lachie Davis, Tyler Humphrey, Blake Mottram, Louis Roberson and Joshua Worboys kicked one apiece.
It was a mixed bag of results for the Bombers on the netball courts, however Open coach Sophie Hinkley said she was pleased with the overall performance of her side to sneak home with a six-goal win.
“We gradually built on our lead throughout the game and I think we were up by about 11 at three-quarter time,” Hinkley said.
“Both sides made some changes at that stage and within the first five minutes of the last quarter I think those changes really worked in Camperdown’s favour. But I was pleased with how our girls reacted and fought on for the win.
“Alicia Blain, who recently played her 150th game, made a couple of great intercepts and that really helped us out. We have a great mix of youth and experience which is of great benefit to our side.
“We’ll take on South this weekend and that will be a great test for all our teams. Their Open side is no doubt the best in the league but we have some small goals to achieve.”
