COBDEN Bombers had a disappointing start to its 2022 campaign, losing at home to South Warrnambool by 54 points.

Teams, officials and supporters observed a minute’s silence before the game to acknowledge the tragic recent loss of past player and club sponsor Clinton Baulch, before launching into the season opener.

The Bombers were 17 points down at the first break but scored only two behinds in the second quarter to fall 35 points behind by half-time at 2.4 (16) to 6.15 (51).

In a competitive third quarter Cobden kicked four goals to the visitors’ five, but the deficit was too much for the Bombers, finishing 8.8 (56) to the Swans’ 15.20 (110).

Cobden coach Dan Casey was aware coming into the contest that his young players would take some time to find their feet, but good performances from Grady Rooke and Louis Darcy will serve as positive take-aways for the Bombers.

Louis Cahill and Joshua Hickey kicked two goals each for Cobden, with Oliver Darcy, Ryleigh McVilly, Thomas Spokes and Sam Thow also contributing to the goal tally.

Cobden travel to Portland this week to face the Tigers, who are coming off a 49-point win away at Warrnambool on Saturday.

In other matches around the league, North Warrnambool crushed Port Fairy 37.21 (243) to 6.5 (41), Koroit beat Hamilton by 88 points, and Camperdown got over Terang Mortlake by 24 points.

The club also unveiled its new netball facilities this week when it hosted South Warrnambool to kick off the 2022 A grade netball season.

The facilities, renamed after club netball icon Ellen Darcy, feature shelters around three sides of the courts.

However, the new-look playing surface couldn’t inspire the Bombers to a win, the side going down 41-52 against South in a hard-fought contest.

In other netball matches last weekend Koroit had a day out against Hamilton, winning 73-39, North Warrnambool beat Port Fairy 42-34, Warrnambool defeated Portland 51-36, and Terang Mortlake edged out Camperdown 40-38.
