Bombers show form against Roosters

COBDEN’S senior footballers face a tough run home, facing two of the top five sides in the final three rounds of the home and away season.

The Bombers, currently sitting sixth on the Hampden League ladder but just percentage behind the fifth-placed Saints, will need to be at their best for the remaining home and away rounds if they are to sneak inside the five.

They will take on bottom side Portland this Saturday before facing the second-placed North Warrnambool and then Terang Mortlake (fourth) in the final round.

The fifth-placed Saints will host Terang Mortlake this Saturday before taking on ninth-placed Hamilton and then Port Fairy (7th).

The Bombers showed they have what it takes to be in the league’s top five, falling just 12 points short over ladder leaders, South Warrnambool, last weekend.

Final scores were South Warrnambool 12.10.82 to Cobden 10.10.70.

The Bombers started strong at Friendlies Society Park, taking a 13-point lead into the second term, however the Roosters fought back to get within three points by the half-time break.

The third quarter was a tight one, with the Roosters converting well on the scoreboard to turn the tables and take a four-point lead into the final term.

The home side was able to add 3.3 to the board while containing the Bombers to 2.1 to take the win, 12.10.82 to 10.10.70.

Best for the Bombers were Tim Auckland, Zac Green, Henry Robertson, Paul Pekin, Luke Smith and Jesse Williams.

Robertson kicked three goals for the day while Thomas Spokes added two.

Other goals went to Ben Berry, Christian Koroneos, Pekin, Smith and Williamson.

In the reserves game, Cobden celebrated a well-earned 11-point victory over South and hold top spot on the league ladder.

Final scores were Cobden 8.6.54 to South Warrnambool 7.1.43.

Nicholas Kemp and Louis Robertson both kicked two goals for the side while team-mates Tully Darcy, Michael Koroneos, Ashley Rosolin and Joshua Worboys added one each.

Among the best players were Lachlan Herschell, Harrison Herschell, Louis Darcy, Gryff Dwyer and Nicholas Kemp.

Earlier in the day, the under 18s had a tough day out, going down by 46 points to the Roosters, 3.6.24 to 10.10.70.

Ryan Mottram kicked two goals while Kayden Daffy added one.

Best players were Brodie Foster, Mottram, Zach Roberts, Finn Darcy, Harvey Wiggins and Billy Roberts.

Cobden’s open netballers put in a strong performance against league powerhouse South Warrnambool, falling just 11 goals short, 43-54.

Best for the Bombers were Grace Taylor, Emily Finch and Jaymie Finch.
