The Storm won the toss and sent Bookaar in at the Timboon Recreation Reserve, with the visitors making steady early progress.

The Pelicans were 0/80 at drinks (25 overs), with openers Eddie Lucas and Simon Baker putting on a 107 run opening stand before Lucas was dismissed for 45 in the 31st over.

“The ground was really slow and wet in the morning,” Bookaar captain Lachie Green said.

“Eddie and Simon both batted well, they showed their experience at the top, they’ve both got the temperament to go hard or to dig in.”

Baker went on to score 93 from 127 balls, his innings including two fours and two sixes.

“It wasn’t Bakes’ prettiest knock, he got dropped four times, but he did a wonderful job as the anchor.”

Albie Cheeseman contributed 17 from 27 balls as Bookaar ended on 7/202 from their 50 overs.

“Everyone came out and had a crack when they had to and got us to a good score.”

At 1/94 in the 25th over, the home team looked in control until Tim Fitzgerald and Paddy Baker combined to slow the run rate with tight 10 over spells.

“Tim and Paddy were great, they bowled good lines and made it hard for the batsmen.”

With the Storm closing in on the Pelicans total, Paddy Hassett and Michael Winzar were entrusted with the ball in the final overs, and kept the home team to 8/197 to record a thrilling five run win.

“The way Paddy and Michael bowled was not a fluke, they used their variations well, it’s something they’ve both worked on a lot in the pre-season.”

This week Bookaar play the undefeated Irrewarra at Colac Secondary College Oval, and will do so with six players out for a wedding, including Green.

In division two, Bookaar had a strong 84 run win over Boorcan at Boorcan.

The Pelicans batted first, making 185 after being dismissed in the 40th over.

Stephen Fitzgerald with 48 and Henry Green with 46 were the top scorers.

Boorcan reached 4/101 when play was washed out, Bookaar winning under the Duckworth/Lewis system.

This week the division two Pelicans play Heytesbury-Princetown Purple at Frederick St.

Bookaar’s scheduled under 16 game was washed out, this Sunday the junior Pelicans play Cobden at Frederick St.
