Bottle lids turn into mural at P-12
TIMBOON P-12 School students have turned a collection of bottle lids into a colourful mural.

TIMBOON P-12 School students have turned a collection of bottle lids into a colourful mural.
School P-6 art teacher Sarah Mackieson said grade three to six students had been involved in putting together the mural which has been dubbed ‘In an Octopus’s garden’.
“Students collected over 15,000 lids during the last two years and hours were spent cleaning and essentially sorting,” she said.
“Another competition was held to collect ideas for the design. At the end I tried to incorporate parts from many of the student’s ideas and designs."
“The Year 3-4 students sorted, placed and glued most of the lids and the initial design was drawn and painted by the year 5-6 students.”
Mrs Mackieson said themural was attached inside the Port Campbell tennis courts during this year’s Port Campbell Crayfest.
“It now takes pride of place in an outdoor learning space at our school,” she said.
“Students have been having lots of fun trying to find the two hidden keys to the treasure chest that have been stolen by two underwater animals, the hidden clock which is inside a locket donated by one of our teachers, where the cat is, which animal has two eyes which are different sizes, what’s missing on the turtle and how many horses there are."
“It started off just using lids, but the enthusiasm grew and students brought in shells, netting, real seaweed and other items scavenged or washed up on our local beaches.”
Mrs Mackieson said the mural was brought to life thanks to a grant from the South West Community Foundation.
“I’m very grateful to all our school families who collected lids and our school team of students, teachers and community members who helped to assemble our mural,” she said.
“Left over lids are going to be used by our littlies in a wellbeing project later in the year and some have already been donated to the high school to be blended and turned into plastic ink and used in their 3D printers.”
