JESSICA Negrello was recently announced as the winner of the 2023 South West TAFE School Based Apprentice of the Year (hair and beauty).
She spent the year learning tips of the trade and honing her skills at Mallani Hair and Beauty in Cobden under the guidance of owner Natalie Pekin.
Jessica said she was surprised with the acknowledgement.
“I was excited,” she said.
“I knew I had won one award, but I didn’t know which one.”
Jessica, who has just finished her schooling at Mercy Regional College, will pursue her dream of becoming a hairdresser and has been offered an apprenticeship at Mallani Hair and Beauty next year.
“I don’t want to do anything else,” she said.
“I want to thank Natalie for her support.”
Jessica completed her School Based Apprenticeship this year and completed a dual certificate in hairdressing and makeup across 2021-2022.
Ms Pekin congratulated Jessica on her success and was looking forward to seeing her skills continue to grow throughout her apprenticeship.
“I’m just very proud of her,” she said.
“I’m looking forward to teaching her everything.
“She’s definitely got the talent.”
Westvic Staffing Solutions’ Amanda Cook, who helped oversee Jessica’s school based apprenticeship, said she had shown “dedication, growth, determination and pride” towards her career.
“Westvic congratulate Jessica on her amazing effort being awarded the school-based apprentice of the year at the recent 2023 Pure Hair, Beauty and Wellness Awards,” she said.
“Westvic Staffing Solutions look forward to being part of Jessica’s progression into a full time apprenticeship and believe she has a wonderful career ahead of her.”
Ms Cook said there were a number of benefits for students completing a school-based apprenticeship.
“Students earn a wage while gaining valuable training on the job, including attendance at trade school all while obtaining a high school certification,” she said.
“Undertaking a school-based apprenticeship allows employers the opportunity to engage a student over a longer period of time which is beneficial when looking at selecting future full time apprentices.”
