Britnell named to shadow cabinet

SOUTH West Coast MP Roma Britnell has been named to the shadow cabinet following the announcement a Western Victorian MP will not recontest the 2026 State Election.

Ms Britnell will assume the role of Shadow Cabinet Secretary, taking over from Member for Western Victoria Joe McCracken after he announced he will not recontest the upcoming election.

The announcement was made following the election of David Southwick as deputy leader of the Liberal Party.

Ms Britnell, the deputy chair of the Public Accounts and Estimates Committee and Shadow Assistant Minister for Roads and Road Safety, re-joins the Shadow Cabinet after having missed out when Mrs Wilson first assumed party leadership in November last year.

She said she was pleased to have been invited to join the Shadow Cabinet.

“I value the opportunity to contribute my voice at a leadership level and to ensure Western Victoria is represented with experience and practical expertise,” Ms Britnell said.

“After 10 years in the party room, including seven years in Shadow Cabinet, I bring a depth of knowledge shaped by my professional and personal background.

“This includes experience as a nurse, a farmer and a small business operator, as well as raising and educating children.

“I look forward to continuing to apply this experience in shaping strong, informed policy outcomes.”

Ms Britnell said she believed the position would support better representation of constituents.

“My focus is, and will always remain, the South West Coast communities where I live and represent,” she said.

“Being part of the Shadow Cabinet strengthens my ability to be a strong and effective advocate for the region, ensuring that the views, challenges, and opportunities of South West Coast and regional Victoria are clearly made known in Melbourne and reflected in leadership-level decision-making.”
