Camperdown’s Grace Brown came agonisingly close to winning the Women’s Tour in Britain last weekend.

AUSTRALIA’s top-ranked road cyclist, Camperdown native Grace Brown, fell one second short of a Women’s Tour win in Britain on the weekend.

Brown went into the final 143km stage equal on time with Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini, and looked to be in good shape after winning an intermediate sprint and earning a three-second bonus mid-way through the stage.

But the Italian rider stayed with lead group and eventual stage winner Lorena Wiebes, finishing with a desperate sprint to end in third for the stage.

The finish earned Longo Borghini four bonus seconds, just enough to edge one second ahead of Brown and take the major title.

It was a frustrating end to an excellent performance from Brown throughout the 720km event, the Camperdown rider finishing second on the podium in the general classification five seconds ahead of Poland’s Katarzyn Niewiadoma.
