SPIN bowler Amila Mendis and opening batter Dave Murphy shared the men’s division one Team Champion title at Pomborneit Cricket Club’s presentation day last Sunday.
Samantha LaFranchi was named women’s division one Team Champion, also winning the most wickets award with 15 for the season.
The club also celebrated the women’s division two side’s premiership win in the Colac District Cricket Association, the club’s only silverware for the season and the 27th in its history.
President Dave Murphy said the club was thrilled with the women’s result.
“It was a good reward for those girls, a lot of them only started playing cricket last year and it’s unbelievable how much they’ve improved,” he said.
“They’ve taken their game to the next level, and I’ve got a funny feeling that in the future women’s cricket will be as big if not bigger than men’s cricket in regional Victoria, it’s very entertaining to watch.”
Murphy said he was proud to receive his side’s Team Champion award and praised co-winner Mendis’ performance throughout the year.
“Amila had a ripper season, he’s very handy with the ball and he chipped in with the bat when he was needed as well,” he said.
“He’s a very deserving winner. For me, I wasn’t expecting to win it, I didn’t have a great impact before Christmas, but it’s always nice to receive these awards.”
