HISTORY awaits either Pomborneit or Bookaar this weekend, with the two clubs set to square off in the inaugural Colac and District Cricket Association Youth Women’s grand final.

The Bulls and Pelicans will meet at Pomborneit Recreation Reserve on Sunday after the pair finished first and second on the ladder respectively.

Pomborneit earned the right to host the decider after finishing unbeaten on top.

Bulls skipper Narelle Place said her side was thrilled to make the grand final.

We’re very excited to have made the grand final in our first year,” she said.

“Everyone was a bit nervous last night (Wednesday night) at training before the grand final but there is plenty of excitement to be out there and have some fun.

“It’s slowly starting to sink in. We definitely did not expect to be straight into the grand final like this and we definitely did not expect to be undefeated.

“The competition over the 10 weeks has had so much improvement, every club has improved massively. It’s been really competitive.”

Place said her side would have some expectation on itself given it has not lost yet.

However, she said the expectation was more on the Bulls maintaining its high standards rather than the possibility of being defeated.

“We’re definitely feeling some pressure to keep to that high standard,” Place said.

“We know that Bookaar are going to bring their all and will be extremely competitive.

“Grand finals are a different game and anything can happen, especially in cricket but we’re just hoping to play really well on the day and come out on top.”

Bookaar captain Heidi Stansfield said her group was “pretty excited” to be playing in the decider.

“I think everyone is kind of surprised that we did so well this season because we’ve got a couple of experienced players but half of us hadn’t really played before,” she said.

“It’s amazing to be in the grand final in the first season for a lot of the girls.

“I reckon a lot of the girls have improved so much. Like Erin Hassett hasn’t really played before at all and now she’s opening the bowling and is a beautiful bat too.

“A lot of girls are like that. They haven’t really played before but are now cricketers.”

Stansfield conceded favoritism would be with the Bulls given they had failed to defeat their opponents this year.

“I think we definitely need to get those first couple of girls out in the batting order because they have strong batters who haven’t really gone out this season,” she said.

“If we can get a couple of quick wickets and keep the pressure on in the field I think that we have every chance.

“I think a lot of the girls are also really nervous but we feel that we have nothing to lose really. We’re happy with where we’ve got to now.”

Sunday’s match starts at 2pm.
