Bushfire place of last resort sessions successful
THE Country Fire Authority (CFA) were out and about in the district recently, hosting a series of sessions talking about Bushfire Places of Last Resort and fire safety measures.

CFA community engagement coordinator Emma-Lea Murphy said the CFA considered the sessions successful, despite 25 people attending across Camperdown, Derrinallum and Lismore.
“The CFA welcomed any community members who attended these sessions, as they are seeking crucial information to prepare for the upcoming fire season,” she said.
“Residents who attended these fire safety information sessions gained valuable insights into what a Bushfire Place of Last Resort/Neighbourhood Safer Place is, as well as what it is not.
“They learned about fire behavior in their local environment and how to stay informed about fire conditions.”
The sessions were held near or at the identified places of last resort in the three towns, allowing residents to get to know the area while asking questions about preparing for the upcoming fire season.
Residents also received an information pack, which included definitions of the warnings used during an emergency; a frequently asked questions fact sheet on places of last resort; flyers with information on the fire danger rating system; a map of Total Fire Ban districts in Victoria; and a list of information sources for warnings and updates during an emergency.
Mrs Murphy said it is important for residents to understand their bushfire risk and plan ahead, with actions they can take to prepare themselves and their properties for fire season discussed at the sessions.
“Community members should know what actions to take on hot, dry, windy days and prepare for all possible situations,” she said.
“It’s essential to discuss with family and friends how to know when to leave, where to go, and how to get there.
“Never wait for an official warning before leaving, as it may not come.
“Fires can start quickly and threaten homes and lives within minutes - make sure you have a plan and practice it.
“People have lost their homes due to simple things, like embers landing on their doormat. Before you leave, make sure to move anything that can burn away from your house.”
Mrs Murphy encouraged residents to download the VicEmergency app, as well as save the VicEmergency Hotline (1800 226 226) to their phones.
