A NEW attacking line-up did not disrupt Woorndoo Mortlake’s bid to post successive Mininera and District Netball Association A grade wins last Saturday.
Coach Georgia McCormick revealed the Tigers entered their encounter with Moyston Willaura with a new combination in the circle and was pleased with how it went as her side secured a 43-30 victory.
“It’s always a really challenging game against Moyston and we had a different attacking combination on Saturday so it was pleasing to get the win,” she said.
“Sarah Cameron was unavailable so we brought Kristy Crawley up from B grade, she played a full game in A grade and it went really well.
“Obviously with Sarah not playing we had a shorter combination with Kristy and Ash Spokes and Moyston have a goal keeper who is six foot four so we had to change our style of play.
“That took a bit to get used to but it worked well, I thought Kristy and Ash did well in there considering the height difference, they played creative netball which was good.”
The Tigers started the contest strongly and opened up a four goal lead at quarter time before the Pumas chipped into the margin in the second quarter.
But Woorndoo Mortlake then responded with a strong second half, scoring nine goals to five in the third term and 11 goals to five in the last quarter to record a 13 goal win.
McCormick was pleased with her side’s ability to lift in the second half while noting the return of Kate Jubb and Renae Reynolds to the Tigers’ starting seven.
“In the second quarter Moyston came back, I think we had a four goal lead at quarter time and they got it back but we were able to pick our intensity up in the third and fourth quarters which was pleasing,” she said.
“And we also had Kate and Renae back from overseas and I think our defensive pressure was a lot better than it has been the last few weeks with them back.”
Spokes was adjudged best on court by McCormick, with the goal attack contributing 21 goals from 30 attempts.
Jubb also caught the coach’s eye with her performance at goal defence.
“Ash was by far best on court, she shot really well and her movement and play down the court was fantastic,” McCormick said.
“Kate also played really well bringing the ball out of defence, that was something we really missed while she was away.”
The win leaves the Tigers second on the ladder ahead of a clash with Wickliffe-Lake Bolac, who pushed Penshurst in their clash last weekend.
McCormick said the Tigers would not take the Magpies lightly off the back of that effort despite having beaten the same side by 58 goals in round three.
“We’ll have to obviously take into account their scoreline against Penshurst but it will definitely be an interesting game,” she said.
