Underway: Works are underway for a new Battery Energy Storage System near Camperdown, which is expected to be completed next year.

The BESS is being constructed by renewable energy developer ACEnergy, with project development manager Danny Wilkinson saying works are progressing on schedule for completion in the second quarter of 2025.

“Camperdown was chosen due to its strategic location on the electricity network, which makes it ideal for enhancing grid reliability and stability,” he said.

“The BESS will charge and discharge electricity to help balance supply and demand, improving local network security.

“The BESS will have a capacity of under 5MW, with two hours of energy storage.”

The construction of the BESS is part of ACEnergy’s Distribution BESS Phase two Project, which aims to deliver 20 5MW sites across regional Victoria as well as New South Wales and South Australia.

Mr Wilkinson said the BESS is designed to meet local electricity network needs and support the grid during peak demand.

“Although not a solar farm, the BESS will improve local grid reliability by storing and discharging energy as needed, reducing the risk of blackouts and deferring expensive network upgrades,” he said.

“This will enhance the stability and efficiency of the local power supply.”
