Camperdown bowlers drop out of top four

CAMPERDOWN Bowling Club’s division one side fell out of the top four last weekend following a loss to Colac Lakes.

By wd-news

The final round of bowls before the Christmas break saw the team travel to Colac Lakes with hopes of cementing a spot in the top four.

However, the home team started well and had an 18-shot buffer by the afternoon tea break.

This lead was extended during the afternoon before the home team took the win by 29 shots – edging Camperdown out of the top four.

The team of Darren Coverdale, Barry Atchison, Lud Gungl and Henry Henderson had a tough match against Tim Hassett’s side, going down 35-12.

Luke Wright, Lennie Searle, Harry Van Someren and Ron Simcox had a healthy start with a 10 shot lead by the seventh end, concluding with a six-shot win against Colac’s Jye Whitson, 18-24.

The reverse situation was played out by the team of Ron Cameron, Fred Salmon, Kelvin Rundle and Brad Wilson who, by the afternoon tea break, were down by 10 shots against Will Colihole’s rink.

They steadily bowled their way back to a reasonable defeat, 18-22.

The rink of Matt Brewer, Maria Van Someren, Vicki Brebner and Ray Bourke played the team of Jeff Turner.

This was the closest match of the day, with Camperdown managing to stay within a handful of shots all day before Colac pulled away to a solid win, 25-17.

The overall score was 100-71 in favour of Colac.

Camperdown’s division three side also travelled to Colac Lakes.

A 12 shot difference at half time was eventually turned into 32 shots at the end, with Colac winning 97-65.

The team of Ron Absalom, Bertie Sloetjes, Max Rippon and Jim Boyd played Ross Jackson’s rink.

Coming out of the afternoon tea break with a three point difference, the Colac team pulled away to a substantial win, 31-17.

Leading for most of the day was Graeme Chamberlain, Herm Brebner, Stan Adeney and Graeme Taylor who defeated Aileen Dudley’s team 27-18.

It was a tough day on the green for David Coverdale, Tom Hose, Pam Atchison and Darren Page who were defeated by Colac’s Ken Ezard 35-8.

Les Pearson, Les Dorman, Brent Noonan and Gerard Broderick played Michael Coates’ team and pulled off an excellent comeback to win 17-13.

The division five team faced Colac City.

The home side held a 16 shot lead at half-time before eventually winning 48-25.

The team of Barney Dickson, Gordon Weller, Nick Saligari and Caroline Strampel played the rink of James De Graff.

They remained close to their opposition until the final ends when City pulled away for a 23-12 win.

Ton Vermaas, Pip Robertson, Donna Watts and Deb Noonan found themselves up against City’s Verna Egan, going down 13-25.

A reminder the club pairs will begin this Thursday at 3.30pm.

The Christmas breakup dinner will be tonight (Friday).

Merry Christmas to all members and their families and best of luck for the remainder of the bowls season.

Camperdown’s midweek bowlers welcomed Winchelsea 2.

The wind was unkind to everyone but the sportsmanship and laughter was wonderful.

Maria van Someren, Henry Henderson, Graeme Chamberlain and Donna Watts played on rink two against Ross Erwin’s team.

This was a close game, with some ends only having four bowls in total left on the rink when the last bowl was bowled.

Camperdown led 5-3 on the sixth end, 10-7 on the 12th and going in to the five ends they led 12-9.

Maria and her fellow bowlers won three of the last five ends to win 20-13.

Ron Simcox, Brad Wilson, Pam Atchison and Les Dorman played on rink 3 against Angela Littler’s team.

This game was a totally different story than rink two.

By the sixth end Ron’s team led 11-1.

Winchelsea scored on three ends in the next six ends to be still down 15-4.

Camperdown was consistent and the score blew out to an impressive 32-8 win.

On the last rink Vicki Brebner, Barry Atchison, Kerry Henderson and Stan Adeney had a tough battle against Colin Williams’s side, being less a player.

This gave the lead and third in the side an extra bowl.

Vicki’s team was a bit rattled but was only down 5-8 on the sixth end.

They turned the score around by the 12th end and led 15-12.

Going into the last five ends they led by seven shots, 21-14.

Vicki’s team scored on three ends to bring home a win 27-16.

Midweek will resume on January 14, 2025.

There will be four games until the start of finals.

The Camperdown Bowling Club Corporate Challenge season will start on February 3 and will be played over four nights.

A barbecue will be provided while the game is being played.

Four more teams are needed. Anyone interested should contact Ron Simcox 0419 372 469 Fred Salmon 0427542430 or Herm Brebner 0418 544 704.
