A TREE planting ceremony marked the end of an era as the Graduating Class of 2020 at Camperdown College put down their books for a moment and picked up a shovel.

The 28 students took to the task just as they have tackled the year – straight into it with no time to waste.

As they turned the soil prior to each planting a Hakea or Acacia Tree, school principal Cherie Kilpatrick explained the symbolism behind the plantation.

“The planting of these trees is to celebrate the final year of schooling and recognise the strength and resilience each of these students has shown during COVID 19 interruptions” she said.

A plaque, which names each of the students, erected on site reads “This plantation recognises the strength and resilience of the graduating Camperdown College Year 12 class of 2020 during remote

learning due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Reach for the Sky”.

“Like these Hakea and Acacia trees, our graduating students will face sun and rain, wind and drought,” Ms Kilpatrick said.

“We wish them all the best as they reach for the sky just as these trees will.

“We have a strong Alumni Program which engages with students long after they’ve left the classrooms.

“These trees will be a visual reminder for the class of 2020 in years to come that they are still a part of the Camperdown College community.”

She said a similar plantation will happen at the junior campus later in the term to recognise the Year 6’s efforts this year explained Ms Kilpatrick.

Camperdown College has been working with arborist Kyle Gervis and the Safe Tree Program to prune or remove any high-risk trees, with the new plantation replacing trees which required removal.

The first exam on the schedule is VCE English on November 10.
