Camperdown down to CBD’s last three

THE last time Camperdown won a Corangamite Bowls Division top grade pennant premiership it had to win two finals in one weekend.
Almost 10 years since that win, the club finds itself in a similar situation, needing to win a preliminary final tomorrow (Saturday) to have a shot of premiership glory this Sunday.
The Thornton Street-based club, which won last week’s elimination final over Colac Central 97-87, will face Colac City at Colac tomorrow (Saturday) in a bid to make the decider where Colac is awaiting the winner.
The irony of the situation is not lost on skipper Luke Wright, who revealed Camperdown won its first final in years last weekend.
He said that win had given his side renewed confidence it could re-write history once again despite knowing the odds are stacked against them.
“The last time Camperdown won a premiership we had to win two finals in two days to get it,” Wright said.
“It would be ironic to do it again and make a grand final and potentially win a premiership.
“Last weekend was the first final we’ve won since that grand final.
“There’s been a number of losses in between so it was good to get back on the board.”
Wright said the side was also out to redeem itself for its early season contest with City.
The Colac-based club won three rinks and 119-79 overall in the pair’s round three clash, but Wright is confident his side has the form behind it to reverse that result.
“They touched us up early in the year so everyone wants to have another shot at them,” he said.
“After last weekend, we’re pretty confident we can win.
“We were obviously really happy to make the finals and now we’ve given ourselves a chance (to make a grand final) which is all you can ask for at the start of the year.”
Wright said his club would also handle the extra pressure associated with a preliminary final given it had experienced playing within a finals-like atmosphere over the past fortnight.
“We’ve really played two finals in a row already,” he said.
“The last game of the home and away season we had to win or we were eliminated and it was the same last weekend.
“We’ve played two elimination games in a row already and have given ourselves a shot to go out there and do it again on the weekend.”
While City will likely go into the contest as favourites, the underdogs know if they remain level-headed they can take the contest deep.
“They’ve got some pretty experienced players and they’ve won a lot of finals so I think the key for us is to not do numbers early,” Wright said.
“If we can keep it tight we give ourselves a chance.
“That’s all you really want, to have a chance with a few ends left tosteal it.”
Saturday’s preliminary final will start at 1pm while Sunday’s grand finals will be held at 12.15pm.
The division one and two grand finals will be held at Camperdown Golf in a great reward for the local club, while the division three and four deciders will be played at Cobden.
Presentations for all games will be held at Camperdown Golf from about 6pm onwards.
