Camperdown Giants sweep Lorne to hold second

CAMPERDOWN went close to pipping top side Colac (1) with a clean sweep victory over Lorne last Saturday, finishing the season just four points off first place on the Corangamite Bowls Division One ladder.
The Giants’ second spot finish grants them a double chance in the finals, where they play the league leaders in the qualifying final at Colac Central this week.
The winner advances to the grand final, while the loser will play the winner of the elimination final next week.
Camperdown defeated Lorne with a convincing 109 to 72 shots, taking all four rinks.
Mark McDonald (29-15) and Matthew Brewer (26-12) both recorded 14-shot victories, while Ronald Cameron defeated the ever-difficult Leigh McIlvenny 30-25 and Luke Wright triumphed 24-20.
Skipper Matthew Brewer said his team were thrilled to finish in second place, but wanted to go all the way this season.
“It’s great for everyone involved, it was a real team effort to finish where we have,” he said.
“We just wanted to make sure we got the win at home and did enough to stay in second, and now we’ve got our mind on the job for next week.
“We’re happy we made finals but we want to go a bit further, we definitely want to get into the grand final this year.”
Brewer said his side’s confidence heading into this week’s qualifying final was bolstered by their away win over Colac in round eight.
“We’re in good form and we’re playing well as a 16, which is the most important thing, and if we can reproduce the form we’ve been playing in we’ve got to be a chance,” he said.
“We’re not getting to far ahead of ourselves, we know what we have to do.
“Yes, we’ve achieved what we wanted to achieve and got that double chance, but we haven’t dwelled on it, next week is the aim now.”
Brewer said the club had focused this year on constructing a side of four evenly-balanced rinks, which had worked well through the season and would hopefully continue to into the finals.
“I’ve been in Camperdown a few years now, and we’ve made finals most years, but the stronger sides have always come out on top because they’ve always had a bit more depth,” he said.
“One thing we’ve really concentrated on, and which the selectors have got be applauded on for doing a great job with, is making our rinks as even as we can across the board.
“It holds us in good stead because we don’t have any weak links.”
Camperdown (1) will be joined in Colac by their fourth division side, who finished in fourth position and will compete in the elimination final against Cressy at Colac City.
