Camperdown Magpies Golf Bowls- Notes
WHEN people say “let’s finish the season on a high note” that’s exactly what came to fruition at the Camperdown Golf Bowls Club.

WHEN people say “let’s finish the season on a high note” that’s exactly what came to fruition at the Camperdown Golf Bowls Club.
And what a way to finish a season full of highs.
Finalising the men’s pairs championship, the mixed pairs championship and the men’s president’s handicap on the one day was just the icing on the cake for such a tremendous year, both on and off the green, for the club.
This ensured that every spectator witnessed some great bowls played by the club’s male and female competitors.
In the men’s pairs event, Gary Body and Jack Paasse had to draw on all their experience to play some amazing shots to defeat Glenn Winsall and Peter Hindhaugh.
Glenn and Peter battled it out to the finish, but were just outplayed by Gary and Jack, who continually frustrated their opponents with a tremendous exhibition of drawn bowling, proving that they are worthy winners of the pairs title.
The mixed pairs semi-finals were played before lunch, with Ilma Daws and Michael Brebner just getting over the line ahead of Jan and Greg Edwards, while Rowena Dunstan and Dan Stewart were successful against Pam and Dennis Place in another close encounter.
The final was a very evenly contested affair, with both ladies proving they are as good if not better than their male counterparts, drawing shot after shot, and maintaining that high level of consistency for the entire match.
With the game level with just two ends to play, a great finish was assured and those watching weren’t disappointed.
Ro and Dan took a three-shot advantage into the final end.
With the game in the balance, and Ilma and Michael holding three shots in the head, Dan produced the shot of the day to replace one of the shot bowls with a better one.
Holding that one shot they were able to claim the title of mixed pairs champions - another set of worthy winners.
The president’s handicap event also played its semi-finals prior to the lunch break.
Paul Richards and Chris McLeod enjoyed a very close game, with Paul eventually taking the first semi-final win.
Club president John came up against the current men’s champion in David Bateman and they both played a very entertaining game before John finally put David out of the competition.
Unfortunately for John, he struck ‘a machine’ in the final, as Paul repeatedly drew inside John’s close bowls giving the spectators an exhibition on how to play magnificent bowls.
One of the best individual displays seen on the club’s green for some time, and another very worthy winner.
At the end of the day, five happy and deserved winners and a heap of very satisfied spectators who enjoyed every minute of the final events on the club calendar.
As members look forward to next season, the club also looks to its annual meeting to be held on Wednesday May 10, and the election of some new faces as some of the committee steps aside.
Anyone who feels they may have something to offer in any way, please don’t hesitate to get your nomination in to the secretary as soon as possible.
Enjoy the break over the winter, enjoy continued good health, and hopefully we will all turn out and do it all again next season.
