WHAT a season for the Camperdown Golf Bowls ‘Magpies’ thus far.

Five teams competing over two forms of pennant, four teams make the finals, two teams go on to perform at the highest level of the two competitions.

Could we have asked for better?

Would both lots of selectors have been happy with the results?

Midweek pennant and Division One make the grand-final, coming from fifth spot on the ladder prior to the last home and away game.

Division three finish fourth and are eliminated in their semi-final, but put up a great effort and were only just headed towards the end of playSaturday pennant, and Division One make the grandfinal after being in the top two teams for the entire season.

Division Two also came from fifth, prior to the last home and away game, and they too are eliminated in their semi-final, but they too also fought it out to the end and only just succumbed.

Division Three struggled for consistency because of players being unavailable, but have had a tremendous learning experience over the season, and can look forward to next year with confidence.

For a club of our size, I believe that with one grand final still to be decided, we should be elated at the results so far.

Last Saturday saw Division One put themselves solidly into the frame for a crack at a premiership, defeating a very well credentialled Apollo Bay in a game that went down to the wire, but a game where we once again showed that fighting spirit that has kept us in the upper level of the division.

Successful on three rinks and winning by ten shots overall, a fantastic team effort has put us into our first grandfinal for some years, and a grandfinal we are well capable of winning.

Division Two, where the scores were virtually a reverse of Division One, saw Golf go down to Birregurra by twelve shots and winning on only the one rink.

With this only their second year in Division Two, and the second year they have performed in finals, it is a credit to everyone involved, and they too will be looking forward to next season and taking their game to the next level.

Last Tuesday our big chance at a midweek premiership proved to be elusive, and we were out bowled in the dying stages of the match to just go down to Colac Central in a match that had spectators enthralled.

Scoring a ‘fruit salad’, a winning rink, a drawn rink and a losing rink, we just weren’t good enough on the day, but once again, everyone involved could hold their heads high and be proud of their endeavours.

So with a week away from pennant we will look to come back refreshed on Saturday week, and try to add another trophy to the cabinet.

Recently, our club hosted a mini tournament for our sponsors that was played over two nights, consisting of four games of two bowl triples.

The improvement from last year was quite noticeable, with many of our sponsors staying with the same competitors for their teams.

At the end of the second night, the two best performed teams had a three-end play-off, with Molan’s Plumbing proving just a tad too strong in the final for GBM Technology.

Presenting trophies donated by Wayne and Rose Henry of Elm’s Driving School, Thomas Henry congratulated both teams on their efforts and thanked everyone for participating.

Ash Sinnott spoke on behalf of the winners, and thanked the club for putting on two great nights of bowls, and thanked the other sponsors for their continued support.
