MORTLAKE skipper Todd Lamont says his side is still well primed to contend for years to come despite their South West Cricket grand final loss to Pomborneit.
The Cats lost the division one decider by five wickets last Saturday, bringing their flag winning run to an end at two in a row.
While the disappointment will linger for some time, Lamont, when asked, downplayed the notion of the Cats using the loss as a point of reflection on what they had previously achieved.
Instead, he said he believes his players will bounce back with a vengeance next year and will use the disappointment as motivation to add to their collection of recent premierships.
“I think you sit back and reflect when you win, because when you lose it just doesn’t sit well with you, so probably not but it’ll definitely be motivation for next year,” he said.
“Every time we’ve gone out of the finals series not winning, it just doesn’t sit well and you just want to do better.
“We’ll certainly be using it as motivation but credit where credit is due, Pombo was too good.”
The all-rounder said ideally he wanted everyone to stick together moving forward, noting the club has found a good balance of youth and experience.
“You always want to do that and we’ve got a good mix at the moment, we’ve got a bit of youth,” Lamont said.
“We’ll probably lose Isaac Wareham, that might be his last game depending on how well he goes with his footy.
“We’ve hopefully got a few coming next year but we thought we had a few coming this year so you never know, but whatever we’ve got, we’ve got, and we’ll go from there.
“As long as you have the hunger and desire, there’s plenty of talent and potential (within the group), so it’s just a matter of fulfilling that.”
In other words, Lamont said the Cats “absolutely” should be contenders again next year and he expects Tyler Schafer to be heading their charge.
“I think Tyler has taken a massive step this year and is now one of the senior players and one of the leaders and I think he’ll carry the team for a long time,” he said.
“I think we’ll contend again, it’s just a matter of bringing our A-game I suppose.”
