Cats form continues

MORTLAKE has continued to make its mark on the Warrnambool Moyne District Cricket competition, kick starting the new year in fine form.

In the Premier division, the Cats resumed the 2024/25 season last Saturday, hosting Russells Creek at DC Farran Oval.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the home side put on a consistent show with the bat to reach 10/155 in the 61st over.

While openers Taj Podger (9) and Chamika Feranando (8) fell short of double figures, Corey Rounds added 16 to the board before Clinton Baker top scored with 31 in an innings that included two boundaries.

Team-mates Jack Lehmann (29) and Kalhan Sineth (27) also contributed to the run tally.

Russells Creek began its innings at the crease and at stumps were 0/40 after 15 overs.

The Cats will be keen to defend their total in front of a home crowd this weekend.

Just over half way through the 2024/25 season, the Cats currently sit fourth on the league ladder and will be working hard to earn their spot in the finals.

Round one of the Sungold Cup finals will be played this weekend.

Mortlake will take on Heytesbury-Princetown Storm at Dennington Recreation Reserve from 10.30am Sunday.

The winner will progress to the semi-finals, to be played at Allansford on January 26.

In the Warrnambool Mazda Cup T20 competition, Mortlake defeated West Warrnambool at Reid Oval last Sunday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Cats notched up a quick-firing 9/111.

Kalhan Sineth led the run tally with an impressive 34 runs from 37 deliveries which included two boundaries.

Clinton Baker added 27 to the scoreboard while captain Todd Lamont contributed 25.

In reply, West Warrnambool was contained to just 10/48 with Clinton Baker finishing a great spell to record figures of 3/6 from two overs.

Other wickets went to Kalhan Sineth 2/8 from four, Jack Lehmann 2/4, Chamika Feranando 2/5 and Todd Robertson 1/8.
