Cats hold a slim lead

MORTLAKE holds a slender five run lead with five wickets in hand going into day two of the round 12 Warrnambool Moyne and District Cricket Association premier division match at Terang.

Mortlake crashed to 5/12, with Ollie Mahncke the only player to make more than six, making 15 from 27 balls as the visitors scraped to make 40 all out from just 24.2 overs.

Clinton Baker took the first three wickets as the home side moved to 3/32.

Baker and co-captain Craig Britten combined to take the next six wickets for four runs.

The home team claimed the lead with a 13 run last wicket partnership; Kalhan Sineth claiming the final wicket as Noorat Terang were dismissed for 49.

Baker led the way with 5/19 from 14 overs including nine maidens, with Britten taking 3/22 from 15 with seven maidens.

Mortlake had 17 overs to bat before stumps, slumping to 5/14.

Saman Gonawala on two and Jack Lehmann, who has yet to score, will resume on Saturday hoping to extend Mortlake’s lead.

In the championship division, Mortlake holds a 119 run lead over Nirranda after the first day of the match at the Port Campbell turf wicket.

Will Kain top scored with 47 from 52 balls, hitting nine boundaries.

Brothers Cooper and Arlo Herry each made 20 from 36 and 38 balls respectively opening the batting together, with Brendan Gherashe making 36 from 50 and Sonny Podger 22 from 61.

Nirranda had 25 overs to bat, finishing on 4/77 at stumps.

Will Kain took 3/38 from 12 overs, with Gherashe taking the other wicket to fall so far.

In division three, Mortlake had an eight run loss to West Warrnambool at the DC Farran Oval.

The visitors batted first and were all out for 127 in 33.1 overs.

Jobe Baker led the bowlers with 4/31 from eight overs, with Dylan Wareham taking 3/23 from six overs.

Mortlake only batted 24.3 overs in the run chase; bowled out for 119.

Neil Kelly top scored with 37 from 38 balls, with Ryan Tanner making 20 from 26.

This week the eighth-placed division three Cats play Spring Creek at Woolsthorpe.

In the under 17s, Mortlake/Cobden, chasing Warrnambool’s 5/185, made 5/202 in their day two reply on Tuesday at Mortlake College.

Opener Max Slater led the way with 60 retired from 79 balls, hitting seven boundaries.

Lenny Walsh scored 38 from 53 balls, Arlo Herry 35 from 62 with Sonny Podger unbeaten on 32 from 60 balls in the win.

On day two of the under 15 game on Friday, Mortlake/Cobden scored a 155 run win, restricting Nestles to 7/96 from its 45 overs at Mortlake College.

Rhys Darcy and Ryan Bailey took three wickets each as they defended their 251 made on day one.
