MORTLAKE’s division one side will begin its first Twenty20 campaign in the Warrnambool league tonight (Thursday).

With a successful history in the South West Cricket Association under their belt, and a depth of experience in the short format, Mortlake coach Todd Lamont is confident the Cats can make their mark in their first season in the Warrnambool league.

“We’ve had quite a bit of success in the past and believe that experience will hold us in good stead in our first season in the Warrnambool competition,” Lamont said.

“It’s an exciting time for the club and we’re really enjoying playing in a new league.”

The Cats will tonight take on Nestles at Mortlake’s Farran Oval in the first of a handful of games in the Twenty20 competition.

Lamont is confident his side has the depth to do well, with the inclusion of locals James Cody-Davis, Josh Slater, Darcy Hobbs and Neil Kelly.

“We’re bringing in some more young blokes for fielding purposes and hopefully that’ll pay off,” Lamont said

“We’re looking forward to Thursday night to see how we can go in this new league.”

The Cats are hoping they can repeat their performance of last Saturday and again take the points.

“It was certainly good to notch up another win last weekend but it was a close one. “

Lamont praised the efforts of lower order batsmen Jack Lehmann and Josh Jewell who put on a strong partnership to get the Cats over the line.

“We needed six or seven runs an over for the last half a dozen overs or so and Jack and Josh did that for us; it was a crucial partnership.”

Mortlake finished on 6/173 to take the win over North Warrnambool 8/169cc.

Lamont hit a creditable 61 runs and was well supported by Lawson Attwood with 22, Jack Lehmann 22 not out and Josh Jewell 18 not out.

Best of the bowlers for the Cats were Jack Lehmann 2/16 off six overs and Lawson Attwood 2/28 off nine.

Division two also had a good win on the weekend, finishing on 5/201cc while restricting Brierly Christ Church to just 73.

A highlight of the Cats’ innings was a knock of 68 not out by youngster Riley Kelly.

He was well supported by father Neil on 32, James Tarlboton with 26 and teen Oscar Ritchie on 17.

Best of the bowlers were Henry Smith 2/4 off two, Will Berryman 2/10 off four and Mark Lehmann 2/16 off six.

Division four made it a trifecta of wins for the club last weekend, defeating Russells Creek 7/234cc to 9/113.

Jason Lehmann 59, Jason Harris 56 and Luke Robertson 32 were best with the bat while Luke Robertson 3/23 off five and youngster Jobe Baker 3/8 off three were the best of the bowlers.
