LAST Saturday’s two run win over Brierly Christchurch has Mortlake cricketers sitting two from two in their first season in the Warrnambool District League.

While the result was “much closer than we would have liked,” Mortlake coach Todd Lamont said his side was thrilled to have two wins under its belt after just two rounds – confirming the move away from South West Cricket was a positive one for the club.

“We’re all really enjoying playing in a new league and so far we’ve had great success; hopefully that continues in the weeks to come,” Lamont said.

“Last weekend was certainly abit of a topsy turvy type of game where the outcome really could have gone either way. Fortunately for us we were able to sneak home with the points.”

Lamont praised the efforts of his entire side, saying everyone played their roles, however, made particular mention of what proved to be a vital 35-run partnership from Todd Robertson and Darcy Hobbs.

“Todd and Darcy really got us over the line in the end; it was great to see the tail end really stand up,” he said.

“We lost our way abit in the middle order but those two put on a great partnership for the ninth wicket.

“Our bowlers also held up well, with Clinton Baker taking 2/33, young Josh Slater 1/12 and Lachlan Wareham 1/21. Lawson Attwood also bowled well and was unlucky not to take a wicket or two.”

Best with the bat for the Cats, along with Lamont who finished with a creditable 71, included Todd Robertson 21 not out, Clinton Baker 15 and Lahlan Wareham 12.

The Cats are down to take on Nestles this weekend in what will be their first home game of the season and Lamont is confident the Farran Oval wicket will hold up well despite the recent wet weather.

“We’ve had blokes working flat out to get the grass off the wicket and I’m confident that if the weather holds off it will provide a good playing surface for Saturday. We’re all keen to get as many rounds in as possible this season and see how far we can go in this league.”

Mortlake’s division two side took on Koroit last weekend and managed 90 on the scoreboard, while Koroit finished on 8/91.

Josh Jewell 30 and Neil Kelly 18 were the top scorers for the Cats while best with the ball were Kelly with 3/19 and Oscar Ritchie 2/16.

Division four finished on 133 to defeat Allansford-Panmure 10/76.

Best with the bat were Jack Clifford with an impressive 65 and Luke Robertson on 21.

Will Berryman finished with the figures of 4/10 while Shane Bond supported with 2/10.
