CAMPERDOWN LIONS Club members helped perform a vital service for some the town’s youngest residents this month.

Members were able to head along to Camperdown College to complete eye checks after COVID prevented the annual checks the last two years.

Club member Maree Belyea said tests were conducted on Prep to Grade 2 students as well as Year 7 and 8.

“Each year we usually do Prep and Grade 6, but because of COVID we weren’t allowed in the schools,” she said.

Mrs Belyea said the Lions Australia initiative started in 2017 as a trial before officially starting in 2018.

“It’s a very important project,” she said.

“The schools have been very supportive.”

Mrs Belyea said the students complete four different tests on the day which includes a special camera that takes a photo of the eye and can detect abnormalities.

“If we find a problem the results are sent back to the parents to seek a referral,” she said.
