SOUTH West captain Simon Harkness has led from the front with a classy century on day one at Melbourne Country Week.

Harkness almost snared victory for South West against Bellarine on Monday, batting through the innings to finish the day112 not out.

The Country Week debutant, who also captains local side Heytesbury Rebels, was quick to make his mark on the competition, contributing almost half of South West’s 7/251 (cc) tally.

Unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough to snatch victory from Bellarine Peninsula who made 258.

Also performing well for South West on day one was fellow Rebels’ team-mate Paul Vogels who contributed a handy 32 not out, while bowlers Angus Uwland (Cobden) took 3/42, Gus Bourke (Noorat) 3/55, TharinduRukshan (Camperdown) 2/27 and Issac Fowler (Woorndoo) 2/37.

South West, competing in Country Week’s division two table, was drawn to face Wangaratta on day two (yesterday), Hamilton today (Wednesday) and will round off their series with a clash against Sunraysia tomorrow.
