WOORNDOO Mortlake’s 17 and under netballers are premiers and champions for 2022.

The Tigers put on a strong four-quarter performance last Saturday to defeat Penshurst 33-26 in the Mininera and District grand final at Glenthompson.

Team coach Sarah Cameron said she was “extremely proud” of her team, not only for their efforts on grand final day, but throughout the home and away season.

“The girls really gelled at the right end of the season,” Cameron said.

“They worked hard all year and put in 110 per cent week after week, so to win the flag really was reward for effort.

“But it was certainly a nail-biter (the final). Fortunately we came out firing in the first quarter and were able to maintain that intensity.

“We knew Penshurst had nothing to lose and would put it all on the line so we really had to keep that pressure on and play our game.”

Cameron said while every player contributed towards the win, she made special mention of the efforts of goal attack Elise Killen (named best on court), defender Mia Richie and wing attack Lily Burford.

“Elise is just an absolute powerhorse and she put in a huge four quarters on Saturday, as she has done all year, and thoroughly deserved her award,” Cameron said.

“Mia is also a superstar; she took several crucial intercepts and rebounds which turned the game around. She knows when to step up and make those well-timed moves.

“Lily Burford also made a big impression on the wing; she provided steady feeds into the circle and her talk and encouragement to the goalies was spot on.”
