Chocolyn CFA to open shed

CHOCOLYN’S Country Fire Authority (CFA) brigade will be shaking up the way they collect donations for next week’s annual Good Friday Appeal, opening up their fire station for residents to drop off their donations.

The brigade will be doing a mailbox drop this weekend with flyers to inform residents of the changed plans, including a QR code for those planning a trip away to contribute before the appeal day on Friday, April 3.

Chocolyn CFA brigade secretary Leigh Harry said the central collection point idea at the station, located at 638 Camperdown-Lismore Road, came from a lack of available volunteers to support a drive-around on the day.

“We’re likely the same as many other organisations – we’re struggling to get volunteers who are available on Good Friday to help collect donations, as good a cause as it is,” he said.

“I know Kellie Kempton (Camperdown Good Friday Appeal coordinator) has been having trouble in recent years getting the whole of Camperdown covered with collectors, and we’re in the same boat.

“This year, we’ve decided we’ll be at our Chocolyn fire station for the day.

“It’s harder for us to get in and out of driveways in our trucks and we’re no longer able to have kids on the truck to help us.

“As we all get older, it’s getting harder for us to keep getting in and out of the truck repeatedly throughout the day, so we thought this might be a way, with our limited manpower, that we could still contribute to the appeal.”

The fire station will be open from 8am-2pm, with tea and coffee available for those stopping by to make their donations.

Mr Harry said donations can be made in cash into their tins or online via the QR code which will be onsite.

“Hopefully we get a few passers-by who call in, get a cuppa and make a donation as well.

“We’re just trying to do the best we can with the limited manpower we’ve got, so hopefully it’ll work.

“Locals are welcome to call in and drop off their donation.

“There are no big celebrations there – it’s just a donation point.”

Mr Harry reminded anyone who might be free on Good Friday volunteers for door-knocking in Camperdown are still needed and residents can visit the Guide Hall (251 Manifold St) to collect a tin.
