A community feast: Close to 90 people enjoyed good company and good food on Wednesday to mark the last Community Meal for the year.

Around 90 people filled the hall for a meal of chicken, ham, turkey and vegetables alongside friends, family and other residents.

The main meal was followed by a choice of pavlova or a cake with custard for dessert.

Camperdown Uniting Church’s Colin Hayman said it was “great” to see the hall filled for the Christmas Community Meal.

“Numbers are up this year because sometimes we have dates that match with the Morning Melodies up at the footy ground,” he said.

“Some days, we have the dates clash, but this year we haven’t.

“Over the year, we get an average of 40.

“Some days we have the day care centre – if they come, we get 50.

“Numbers vary during the year, but the average of 40 is pretty good.”

Attendees popped Christmas crackers with each other during the meal, with many paper crowns around the room by dessert.

Lollie bags were also handed out to attendees.

Twenty attendees also received either a box of shortbread biscuits or a jar of chocolates through a lucky door prize.

Mr Hayman said the Community Meals will return again next year and will continue to be open to all community members.

“People just wander in, which is great,” he said.

“The whole concept of this started 16 years ago, and it’s continued.

“Often things like this have a useful life and then stop, but this have continued to grow.

“I think there are a few that have come here for 16 years.

“Over that time, we’ve had different ministers and different volunteers, but everyone’s jumped on deck and gone with it.”
