Leading at lunch, 52-31, Golf maintained the lead until the second last end of the match when Derrinallum hit the front and claimed one shot in the final end to win the game 74-72.

In front of a huge crowd of supporters, the Magpies (who came from fourth on the ladder) can be proud of their efforts throughout the year.

With a lot of first and second year bowlers in the team, they can look forward to the future with great confidence.

Golf managed to win two of the three rinks played.

Liz Riches’ rink of Garry Brian, Ella Blyth and Val Coverdale had a one shot win over Michael Haigh’s rink 22-21.

Peter James’ rink of Denis Place, Ruth Skene and Kell Edwards won their rink over Ken Wynd’s rink 30-26.

Marg Stephens’ rink of Norma Weller, Pat Scott and Terri Sinnott bowled well all day to narrowly go down by seven shots to Fiona Noone’s rink 20-27.

Golf’s Saturday division two team continued its season’s great form with a 11-shot win in the first semi-final over Cressy at Derrinallum, 96-85.

Leanne Fitzgerald’s rink of Kevin Russell, Sam Whytcross and Ray Bateman, who trailed 11 shots to 22 at one stage, clawed their way back to finally go down by the barest of margins, 24-25, against Neville Keating’s rink.

Paul Richards’ rink of Wayne Henry, Taj Merrett and Greg Molan had a great day winning their rink over Dawn Stinchcombe’s 22-15.

Chris McLeod’s rink of Terry Place, Mark Winsall and Greg Edwards also had a four-shot win over John Nelson’s rink 27-23.

Michael Brebner’s rink of Algie White, Andrew Anderson and Michael Mahony finished off the good day with a one-shot win over John Spry’s rink, 23-22.

This win sees the Magpies travel to Cressy tomorrow to take on Winchelsea in the preliminary final.

The winner will take on Colac 2 next Saturday in the grand final.

The two sides have played each other twice this season, with Golf winning their last encounter by 16 shots and Winchelsea winning the first-round encounter by 31 shots.

A close game can be expected.

Ro Dunstan’s rink of Mark Wallace, John O’Donohue and Elaine Waterfall continued their seasons good form with a two shot win over Paul Sorensen’s rink, 22-20.

The other semi-final between Jack Paasse and Greg Teal was played yesterday (results will be in next week’s paper).
