Close shave scheduled for locals
MORTLAKE residents are encouraged to come together for a worthy cause later this year.

As part of this year’s World’s Greatest Shave event, a group of Mortlake residents will cut or colour their hair to support the Leukaemia Foundation’s ongoing research and treatments.
The ‘Mortlake Off or Colour’ team consists of Mortlake Community Development Committee president Kelvin Goodall, Mortlake Returned and Services League secretary John McGuigan, who will be shaving their heads and Mortlake and District Historical Society secretary Sue Potter, who is colouring her hair green.
However, Mr Goodall said more participants are welcome to join the St Patrick’s Day (Sunday, March 17) event.
“While we have the beginnings of our team, we are looking for others to join us raising funds for this important cause,” he said.
Mr Goodall said while he will undergo a complete shave on his head, he is yet unsure how much of his beard he will shave off.
“I have had this beard for over 40 years and have been advised by some friends that it would be too much to get rid of it,” he said.
“So any remnants that may still be there on the day I will be colouring bright green.”
The World’s Greatest Shave will raise vital funds to support the more than 100,000 Australians living with blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
About 35 Australians are diagnosed with a blood cancer every day and an Australian dies due to blood cancers every 41 minutes.
“These people are extraordinary Australians who are helping others less fortunate than themselves,” Leukaemia Foundation chief executive officer Bill Petch said.
“It shows enormous bravery, resilience and empathy to shave their heads in support of someone living with a blood cancer.”
The Mortlake event will take place at the Montgomery Pavilion at Tea Tree Lake on Sunday, March 17.
