THE Terang Co-op has renewed its major sponsorship of the Terang Indoor Sport and Recreation Centre in a bumper deal.

The new sponsorship deal of $35,000 over five years represents an annual increase on the previous deal of $50,000 over 10 years.

Terang Co-op chief executive officer Kevin Ford said the new deal highlights the Co-op’s ongoing commitment to giving back tothe community.

“It’s about the Co-op being part of the community, and the community being part of the Co-op,” he said.

“For me, it’s that we need the community to shop with us – whether it’s the Mitre 10, IGA or the Rural Store because a profitable business allows us to put back in to the community and help the community to grow.

“The fitness centre is an asset for our community.

“We want to make sure it is a current asset which gets plenty of support, and in turn we want to make sure the community supports our retail activities.”

Mr Ford said the increase in per-annum sponsorship cost represented the value the centre brings to the community.

“What we looked at was the need to update the fitness centre equipment,” he said.

“It made a lot of sense to us to continue to support this facility, and to be part of keeping assets current in this community.”

Terang and District Indoor Sports and Recreation Committee members joined Mr Ford and Terang Co-op chairman Geoff Barby at the centre last week to celebrate the continued major sponsorship, which will have spanned 15 years at the conclusion of thenew deal.

Committee president Kerrin McKenzie said the ongoing sponsorship was a win-win.

The Co-op has been a driving force behind the initial success of the centre, representing around a quarter of the community funding which allowed the development of the facility to get off the ground.

“The Co-op funds a really important community group,” Mr McKenzie said.

“It’s good from their perspective because all their Co-op members get a 10 per cent discount on their memberships with us.

“We support the Co-op, and the Co-op supports us.

“The Co-op was terrific in giving us an initial $50,000 sponsorship when we started 10 years ago, and now they’ve increased the per-annum sponsorship so they’ve been right on board and obviously see this as serving a vital community function.”

Terang Fitness manager Kelly Mullen said part of the funds had been used to purchase new, state-of-the-art fitness equipment.

“We were able to purchase a stair-climber and a glute-trainer,” she said.

“Our major sponsorship with the Co-op is incredibly helpful to improving the centre.

“It allows us to purchase equipment which is of good quality and will last a long time.

“Without the Co-op, we wouldn’t be able to purchase such items.”

Ongoing support: The renewed sponsorship will provide a bump in funding support of $35,000 over five years, pushing the sponsorship between the two groups to 15 years.
