Cobden CFA captain Dale Robertson said the brigade received three major donations recently, with smaller but meaningful donations also made by community members.

“Last year, we had a big donation from Fonterra with the big roller doors we’ve put on,” he said.

“They’ve helped with safety in the brigade.

“Sam Monk has donated tools for our back shed for all the maintenance we do.

“We’ve had the Cobden Football Club donate a couple of batteries for our Makita power tools on our trucks.

“It helps us out a lot.”

Smaller donations have included hot chips to eat during the day, soft drinks and offers to help out from community members.

Mr Robertson said the brigade always appreciated the support from the community.

“Thank you for your support,” he said.

“On Total Fire Ban days, we have a crew of eight-10 people sit at the station from 10am-6pm, so that’s close to 80-man hours spent at the station.

“It’s a lot of time and effort we spend here and all the help we can get is unbelievable.

“We’ve got to raise our money ourselves – such as through selling raffle tickets and such – but it’s beneficial for our brigade for anyone to do this.

“That helps us – it doesn’t come out of our pocket, then.”

Mr Robertson encouraged the community to put their hands up to join the local brigade as well.

“On the Total Fire Ban day recently (Tuesday, January 27), we had a truck up at the Lismore fire, people down at the Gellibrand fires and we still had to reload aircraft out here,” he said.

“We were stretched for numbers that day, so anyone who wants to join can contact me or go online.

“The more members we get, the better.”

Anyone interested in joining can submit an expression of interest online at www.cfa.vic.gov.au/volunteers-careers/volunteer-with-cfa/apply-to-volunteer.
